Grain harvest should reach 271.3 million tons, estimates Conab

The Brazilian grain harvest 2021/2022 should reach 271.3 million tons, informed today (8) the National Supply Company (Conab). The estimate, which is part of the 9th crop survey released by the company, also points to a gain of 15.8 million tons compared to the 2020/2021 crop.Grain harvest should reach 271.3 million tons, estimates Conab

According to Conab, this increase in production is explained by a better performance of corn, which grew by 32.3%, even with the losses caused by climatic behavior and the low rainfall in the Center-South region.

“The climatic behavior and the low rainfall, especially in the Center-South region, caused significant losses in corn and soybean crops, as we have been announcing for a long time. Initially, we expected a total production of a crop of 288.6 million tons and due to this weather factor, today we have a reduction, but comparing the 2020/2021 crop, we had an increase of 6.2%, that is, 15.8 million tons”, said the president of Conab, Guilherme Ribeiro, during the presentation of the survey.

According to Conab, the planted area in the current crop is estimated at 73.7 million hectares, a growth of 5.7% compared to the 2020/21 crop. The biggest increases are observed in soybean, 4.6%, or 1.8 million hectares, and in corn, 8.6% or 1.7 million hectares.

The survey also shows that, at the end of May, the first-harvest crops were practically finished, the second-crop crops were in the initial harvest phase and the third-crop crops, along with the winter crops, were in the sowing phase.

In Ribeiro’s assessment, the final result will depend on the weather in the coming months. “The final result of the volume of this crop still depends on the climatic behavior, a preponderant factor for the development of cultures”, said Ribeiro.

Conab informed that, for corn, a total production of 115.2 million tons is expected, an increase of 32.3% compared to the 2020/21 harvest. The survey shows that the first harvest is already in the final stage of harvesting and the second harvest is in the initial stage. The third crop was planted in the second half of April.

In relation to rice, production will be lower than in the past harvest. The estimated drop is 9.9%. As a result, the crop should reach 10.6 million tons, of which 9.8 million are irrigated and 0.8 million are rainfed.

“The weather conditions in May were favorable for the conclusion of the harvest in most states, but there was an excess of rain in the Northeast, which has hampered the progress of the harvest”, says the survey.

Soybean will also have a drop in production, said Conab. The estimated production is 10.1% lower compared to the previous crop and should be 124.3 million.

The bean and cotton crops will have an increase in relation to the previous crop. In beans, Conab estimates an increase of 6.6% in relation to the previous harvest, with production reaching 3.1 million tons.

The cotton crop should have a growth of 19.3%, favored, in part, by weather conditions and the increase in planted area. The estimate is that the harvest will be 2.82 million tons of plume. The harvest started in May and will gain scale in June.

Winter crops, such as oats, canola, rye, barley, wheat and triticale, are in the planting phase, but are still incipiently planted and should add up to just over 10 million tons, of which 8.4 million tons for wheat and 1.2 million for oats.
