Government will grant zero rate VAT in the hotel sector from March

The Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Vieraannounced that The government will implement zero rate VAT in the hotel sector for Uruguayans during the month of March and until after Tourism Week.

On his Twitter social network account, Viera reported “good news for the hotel sector and Uruguayans” since he The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) “will grant the assimilating VAT to the exporter” for hotels from March 1 to April 17 (Sunday of Tourism Week).

This request was recurring from the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) in the last few months and the hierarch I had already advanced it would “a clear and important signal for domestic tourism”. According to Viera, this measure was proposed “convinced that it is an investment from the government but with a good return for the sector”.

Another request that the Mintur had done and who began to apply this Friday is the Elimination of the requirement of PCR test for entry into the country of vaccinated foreigners. Now an antigen test is requested, which is cheaper.

Viera had already expressed regarding this that “The more tranquility, simplicity, simplicity and above all certainty a tourist has to plan their vacations, the better.”, and that the PCR test is “a discomfort” which also “It has a significant cost especially when it comes to a family trip”.

From this Friday, February 18, those who wish to enter Uruguay they can do it with a negative result of an antigen testaccording to ordinance 214 of 2022 of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) signed by Minister Daniel Salinas.

According to the resolution, you can now enter the country “By means of PCR-RT molecular biology technique (PCR test) or antigen test interchangeably“, unlike the previous protocol, which only allowed entry to Uruguay with a negative PCR test.

The ordinance indicates that this decision is explained because “Several countries in the region have adopted the antigen test as an alternative diagnostic technique to the RT-PCR molecular biology technique.“, and because the General Directorate of Health (Digesa)highlights the effectivenessof antigen tests.

Although antigen tests have less precision than PCR, they also they are cheaper and give the result in 15 minutes. The antigen test can be performed up to 72 hours before entering Uruguay.
