The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, determined a special unemployment insurance scheme for the workers of the Punta Shopping affected by the fire, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, informed the Presidential Communication. It is estimated that there are about 2,000 people covered. This government action provides a safety net for so many workers in a situation of uncertainty, he indicated.
Mieres explained this Tuesday the 9th that the special unemployment insurance is aimed at all the workers who carried out tasks in the Punta Shopping premises, affected by a fire in recent days.
The number of employees in question may vary depending on the companies’ ability to distribute them in other branches or in other sections according to their maintenance, logistics or reconstruction tasks, he added.
The difference between the insurance proposed by the Government in relation to the common unemployment insurance lies in the fact that six months’ seniority on the company’s payroll will not be a condition to access the benefit, but it is enough to prove the contribution for the month of July.
Another difference is the compatibility with several incomes, since if the person also works elsewhere, they are not prevented from accessing unemployment insurance, which facilitates the continuity of the employment relationship with the company.
In addition, he indicated that the subsidy will be 50% and for the maximum period of one year allowed by administrative means. The resolution will be ready in the next few hours to avoid discontinuity in salary collection and so that, in early September, workers can receive the subsidy for the corresponding days in August, he said.
Executive will grant unemployment insurance for citrus workers
The Executive Power will also specify the creation of a special unemployment insurance for workers in the citrus sector, for six months, which will be in force between October 2022 and March 2023. The measure will benefit between 2,000 and 3,000 workers in the departments of the north of the country, Mieres specified.
The chief added that the citrus harvest had difficulties this year, due to the squall that affected Paysandú and caused the loss of a good part of the harvest. The sale of the former citrus company Salteña and the entry of the new company FRUTURA, which shortened the harvest period, also had an impact on the sector.
To enable the special unemployment insurance, the government will present a bill to Parliament, he reported. Presidency
