NEW YORK.- Criminals in this city with up to 100 arrests in the last two years walk freely through the different New York streets, according to a report shown by Mayor Eric Adams.
Also, during the last six months of 2022, several people have been arrested three or more times for the same crime, and in some minor crimes, such as shoplifting, recidivism jumps to close to 90% this year.
Dozens of businesses have had to close their doors permanently due to constant thefts.
They steal products from commercial establishments with a value of less than five dollars, such as laundry soap, detergents, and deodorants, among others. Criminals collect them and then sell them in bulk online, earning thousands of dollars.
For shoplifting, 899 people have been arrested three times through June 2022, an increase of 88.9% over the 476 arrested three times for shoplifting through June 2017.
Even a dog was stolen last week from the Dominican Carlos Gil, in Queens; a cat to the owner of the “Green Olives Deli & Grill” winery, located on Seventh Avenue, in Brooklyn.
Also, a police officer and two friends had their watches stolen at knifepoint last week in the same county.
The mayor’s report puts on the table how the efforts of the City Police Department (NYPD) to pursue and arrest criminals are evaporating through the cracks in the justice administration system.
“The city courts have created a no-consequence revolving door for wrongdoing that allows wrongdoers to return to the streets to prey on innocent victims,” he reiterated.
Statistical reviews of the City shared by the NYPD conclude that almost 25% of those arrested for robbery commit another felony within 60 days, this translates to a sharp increase compared to 2017, when 8% of defendants were arrested for another felony within this same time period.
The report specifies: “10 people with extensive criminal careers record almost 500 arrests after NY enacted its controversial bail reform law.”
“24% have increased arrests for different crimes in NYC so far in 2022 compared to the same period the previous year.”
“29% increased arrests for the seven crimes categorized as “major”.
“4,300 illegal firearms have been seized in the first months of 2022.”
“10% increased court summons.”
“31.1% was the overall increase in criminal acts in June 2022 compared to June 2021 (11,073 vs. 8,448).
Adams, since his electoral campaign, has been underlining the devastating effects of the reforms of the Bail Law that have been in force in NY since January 2020.
Despite their attempts to push for changes to the Bail Law approved by the Democratic majority of the State Assembly, organizations and state legislators continue to defend this reform that allowed, among other technical adjustments, that those accused of non-violent crimes wait outside jail for It’s time to go to trial.
