Government of Honduras has detained 12,516 Cubans so far in 2022

MIAMI, United States.- The Honduran National Migration Institute reported this Tuesday that 12,516 Cubans have been detained in its territory so far in 2022, the largest number of illegal migrants currently passing through that country.

According to the report, posted on Twitter account of said institution, between March 14 and April 6 of this year, of 10,139 irregular migrants detained, 6,975 came from Cuba.

Likewise, the Honduran immigration authorities also reported that on March 12, 30 Cubans were intercepted. The group, victims of a human trafficking operation, was traveling on a bus in the town of Juticalpa, department of Olancho.

On the 15th of the same month, another 241 Cubans, along with nine coyotes who served as guides on the journey, were also detained.

The migration crisis facing the country has led several civil organizations to ask the government of the Central American nation to resort to a state of humanitarian emergency.

In this regard, a recent article in the American newspaper The Washington Post declared that more than 155,000 Cubans are expected to have crossed the Mexican border with the United States by the end of October, a figure that would far exceed the numbers of the Mariel exodus in 1980.

Only last March, more than 32,000 Cubans crossed the borders of the United States with Mexico, the same newspaper said.

The political, economic and social situation in Cuba, which has worsened over the last year due to repression, mainly after the social outbreak of July 11, has unleashed an unprecedented exodus by sea and land in recent decades.

From the 1st. October 2021, the date that marks the beginning of the fiscal year in the United States, 1,257 people have been intercepted by the Coast Guard, trying to reach the United States.

In the last two weeks, the US Coast Guard has returned more than 120 people to Havana.
