Government finances scientific research for health, education and nutrition

In March, Nicolás Maduro announced that Venezuela is working on the creation of a scientific research and training center for Venezuelan workers, with the aim of contributing to the diversification of the economy.


The government of Nicolas Maduro He assured this Saturday, July 22, that he is financing scientific projects in areas such as health, education and food, with which he hopes to contribute to the development of the country and the strengthening of science, especially in the teaching of these topics.

Through a press release, the Ministry of Science and Technology indicated that “initiatives” are currently being carried out through the National Fund for Science, Technology and Innovation (Fonacit) and the Corporation for Scientific and Technological Development (Codecyt), without offering details on the amount provided for these projects.

The director of the School of Biology of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Alicia Cáceres, explained that research is carried out in that house of studies with the aim of modernizing teaching processes.

“We have to focus on the university to solve the country’s problems. We must do science that looks at the problems and helps us solve them,” said the professor, quoted in the letter.

He explained that the Institute of Experimental Biology (IBE) is working on “strengthening the scientific laboratory infrastructures for culture, tissues, and tumor biology,” as well as “diagnosing leishmaniasis,” a parasitic disease spread by an infected mosquito that can leave lifelong ulcerative lesions in people.

He pointed out that “plans for the functionality and equipment of the fish museum collections” and the center of microorganism collections are also underway, places that “were abandoned a long time ago”, especially during the economic recession that the country experienced between 2014 and 2021.
