Government appoints Juan Carlos Liendo as new director of DINI

The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) appointed Juan Carlos Liendo O’connor as Director of the National Intelligence Directorate (DINI) through the Supreme Resolution No. 324-2022-PCMpublished today, Sunday December 18, in the newspaper El Peruano.

In this way, Liendo will take over from Retired General Wilson Barrantes, who was appointed by the ousted ex-president Pedro Castillo at the beginning of this month. President Dina Boluarte opted to remove Barrantes, who was questioned about his affinity with Movadef leaders and his closeness to Antauro Humala.

In addition, Barrantes denounced, in 2021, that on one occasion the former Secretary General of the Government Palace, Bruno Pacheco, asked him for S/200,000 to fill the position of director of DINI.

“Terminate the appointment of Mr. Wilson Barrantes Mendoza, in the position of Director of National Intelligence of the National Intelligence Directorate – DINI, thanking him for the services rendered”, indicates the resolution.

Juan Carlos Liendo is a retired colonel of the Peruvian Army and works as a consultant in Latin America Security Affairs, Social Conflict and Violence, Risk Management, Cultural Awareness, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, according to his Linkedin profile.

The new director of DINI also worked as an advisor to the Intelligence Commission of the Congress of the Republic, which is chaired by José Cueto (Popular Renewal).

in dialogue with Peru21, the parliamentarian assured that he did not recommend to the Executive to appoint Liendo as head of the DINI. However, he admitted that Liendo himself told him that he will assume the main direction of intelligence in the country.

“Yes (meets the profile for the position). He has been head of the Army Intelligence Service (SIE). He knows a lot about intelligence.Cueto said.
