Intense hours have been lived in the country and especially in La Moneda after the murder of the first corporal of the Carabineros, Daniel Palma, who died after being shot twice in the head as part of a police control in downtown Santiago.
Early this Thursday, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, together with the Government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, announced that during this day the Naín-Retamal Law will be promulgated, which was dispatched yesterday by the Chamber of Deputies, along with other packages of projects approved by Congress. Among them, the law on arms control, kidnapping, extortion and the one that gives new tools to the police.

“There is no complex in using the tools that the rule of law allows us. This is not a saying, we have shown it, where it has been necessary we have used all the tools that we have within our reach. And in this case, what we are going to focus on It is this type of intervention that the evidence shows us is more effective for this type of problem, but it does not mean ruling out any type of tool,” said Tohá.
On the other hand, it was announced that a series of operational plans will be carried out to reinforce the protection of police officers. Likewise, to intervene 30 communes of the capital that concentrate the largest number of violent crimes. As they commented, the initiative will begin this month in Santiago, one of the communes with the highest homicide rates nationwide.
“We have decided to advance an intervention plan for our police, which will involve, with a greater sense of urgency in the operation, communes that have a high number of violent crimes,” said the government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo.
On the other hand, it was reported that this Thursday, President Gabriel Boric will convene the “highest authorities of the Republic”, for which he will meet with the rest of the powers of the State, police and party representatives. The general director of Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez, is already in La Moneda.
“The President has summoned high authorities of the Republic, of the Legislative, Judicial, Prosecutor’s Office, Comptroller’s Office; so that each one of them identifies what their gaps are, what their needs are to contribute to this effort. So that each one of them raise a desire for coordination and collaboration because we are not going to overcome this by working in isolation,” announced Minister Tohá.

“The State is deployed today to face this situation,” Vallejo said.
The crime against the police officer occurs hours after the general approval by the Chamber of Deputies of the Naín-Retamal Law, a measure that precisely seeks to strengthen and protect the exercise of police and gendarmerie functions and that was developed following the murder of the second sergeant of the Carabineros, Rita Olivares.
This is the third police officer killed in less than a month. This, after the murders of Corporal Álex Salazar and Sergeant Rita Olivares, who also, like First Corporal Daniel Palma, lost their lives in police proceedings.
