Gabriel Carrizo: “This Government is and will be at the service of you Panamanian producers”

The Vice President of the Republic and Minister of the Presidency, José Gabriel Carrizo Jaén arrived this Saturday at the facilities of the Institute of Agricultural Innovation of Panama (Idiap), located in Divisa, to honor the work of the men and women of the field and of the agricultural science professionals.

During his speech, Carrizo Jaén thanked the producers and agricultural professionals for their work and commitment that has guaranteed food on the Panamanian table.

“This Government is and will be at the service of you Panamanian producers,” reiterated Carrizo Jaén.

The Vice President of the Republic proudly remembered his godfather and grandfather Guille, his mother’s father, a hard-working producer of grade C milk from Cocles, who, through an activity as worthy as this, raised a family aware of the importance of land and the value of principles. “Principles that make our farmers honest and full-time people,” he said.

He highlighted the management of President Cortizo Cohen, a man committed to the agricultural sector, whose career has been linked to this sector. He recalled that when they honor him (the President) as Minister of Agricultural Development, he resigns from the government in office for defending the interests of his sector, the interests of farmers, of the humblest in this country. Nothing is casual in life. One of the reasons why he resigned is because he saw that they were building the highway for imports, because he saw that they were not building guarantees for the agricultural sector.

He also said that this fight for the sector led him to become the President of Panama with the commitment that there would be no more containers from Guyana that would run over the agricultural sector and rice producers.

In the activity, Augusto Valderrama, Minister of Agricultural Development, thanked the commitment of the men and professionals of agriculture; and took the opportunity to highlight that it is the first time that the agricultural sector has a State Policy that will mark a government action plan for the next 25 years and that is not at the mercy of the governments in power.

During the celebration of the Day of the Producer and the Professional of Agricultural Sciences, the “Rafael Grajales” medal of merit was awarded in the categories: Best Small Producer (family farming), to Santana Trujillo Visuete, from the province of Coclé; Best Medium Producer, Temístocles Adonay Moreno Ríos, from Herrera; and Best Large Producer, Carlos Augusto Herrera from Herrera, who grows pineapple for export to the European market.

The “Manuel Eleuterio Melo Vilar” medal of merit was awarded to Nataniel Tejedor de León, elected “Best Extensionist”; while the “Best Professional in Agricultural Sciences” in 2022 was the agricultural engineer Ángel Santos Barría Ojo, who received the “Enrique Enseñat” medal of merit. Barría with 35 years of service in the Ministry of Agricultural Development. He currently works in the province of Herrera.

The “Germán De León” medal of merit was received by Pedro Guerra Martínez, elected “Best Researcher of the Year”.

During the act in Divisa, the aquaculture producers were also awarded the “Richard Pretto Malca” medal. In the category of Innovation in Aquaculture Production, Grupo Dos Horizontes was recognized, represented by Isauro Fajardo; while in the category of Small Aquaculture Producer, the Cascajal Aquaculture Producers Sustainable Development Community Committee was elected, represented by the producers María Guerrel and Mariela Hernández.

October 8 was officially declared as the Day of the Producer and the Professional of Agricultural Sciences, through Executive Decree No. 18 of April 16, 2007; however, since 1981 the MIDA used this date to praise the producers and professionals of the country’s agricultural sector.

Also present at the Producer’s Day celebration were the Vice Minister of Mida, Carlo Rognoni; the Minister of Commerce and Industries, Federico Alfaro; the governors of the provinces of Coclé, Veraguas and Herrera, directors of public entities; producers and presidents of the main productive unions in the country.
