Future Minister Urrejola due to Allamand's resignation from the Foreign Ministry: "Defending Chile's interests in the world requires exclusive attention"

The future Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola, spoke after the resignation of Andrés Allamand from the portfolio.

Through her social networks, the Secretary of State elected by Gabriel Boric, pointed out that upon taking office “we will work for a present Foreign Ministry, in the face of citizen problems.”

“Defending Chile’s interests in the world requires exclusive attention. We will devote ourselves to this full-time as of March 11,” he added.

This after former Foreign Minister Andrés Allamand presented his resignation from office this Sunday, amid questions for “abandonment of duties” when the country is going through a migration crisis.

In this regard, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, also spoke, who questioned the late and “unprecedented resignation after a month of change of government” and after the controversial appearance of Allamand fulfilling functions as Ibero-American Secretary General in Spain.

“Allamand should have resigned earlier to avoid foreign policy problems. He should have resigned at the time of his candidacy for the SEGIB position or at least when he had been elected,” he said.

Muñoz recalled that last week a bilateral meeting was held between representatives of the Government of Chile and the Plurinational Government of Bolivia, to analyze strategies to control the migration crisis that affects the border of both countries. “In this context of delicate relations with Bolivia, their presence was very important,” he noted.

The deputy of Humanist Action (I Approve Dignity), Tomás Hirsch, added that “it is very curious and striking, perhaps surreal, the resignation of a non-existent minister. Former Foreign Minister Allamand simply disappeared from the country at the time of greatest need for a clear response from that ministry. What he did was go on vacation, install himself with the ‘pituto’ that he has as a position for the future, totally forgetting about the tasks entrusted to him as Minister of Foreign Relations”.

“His resignation does not make much difference with having remained as minister, since we were with a minister totally absent from the tasks that correspond to him,” he added.

On the contrary, the deputy RN Tomás Fuentes, “highlighted the gesture” of Andrés Allamand in resigning from the Foreign Ministry, “to avoid the opportunism of some politicians who want to tarnish and dirty the management of the Ministry, especially regarding how to face the pandemic” .
