This Monday began the period of 120 days to reregister the cars for free. The procedure cost $4,056 and provides a new license plate and a new vehicle ownership booklet.
The decision, taken by the Congress of Mayors, seeks to regularize the situation of vehicles purchased before 2012, which until now do not have the obligation to be registered in the department where their owner lives or works, as cars purchased from 2012 onwards, according to the law 18,546 of “Regulation of registration of motor vehicles”. Nevertheless, Parliament will analyze this year to remove that limit.
“You have to take advantage of those 120 days to do the process because once the Legislative Power modifies the law, it will become mandatory for everyone”indicated Marcelo Metediera, director of Traffic of the Intendancy of Canelones, in an interview with Underlined.
In Sucive they calculate that there are some 200,000 cars bought before 2012 that are registered outside of where their owner resides or works, and they hope that their situation will be regularized in this grace period, said César García, coordinator of the Single Vehicle Income System ( Sucive), to The Observer.
Procedure
To reregister a car, you must first consult the Sucive’s website whether the vehicle in question can be re-registered. There you must detail the registration number, register, and the departments of origin and destination of the registered person.
If Sucive confirms that the car is capable of carrying out this procedure, you must make an appointment with the corresponding Intendancy. In the case of Montevideo, for example, you must reserve an hour by calling 1950 4000-2, or through the electronic diarywhich opens on Wednesdays at 9 in the morning.
A form must be delivered to the Intendancy, also available on the web of the departmental government. Ask for the data of the vehicle, of the holder(s), and if it has any ongoing police report, especially if it is a sheet metal theft.
The owner must present proof of ownership of the car, certify that he has the patent payment up to date, as well as his driver’s license, and have proof of address through a utility bill (OSE, Antel, UTE, for example). The car must have up-to-date insurance, a clean engine, and it is mandatory to present the two license plates, or the report of its theft.
If the procedure is done by a person who is not the owner of the vehicle, they must bring proof of identity of the owner, which can be their identity card, passport or diplomatic card. In the event that the owner has died, it is necessary to bring a certificate of the judicial sentence of succession and a notarial certificate of the presumed heirs confirming that the person who is going to carry out the procedure is the person or one of the people who inherited the vehicle.
After submitting the documentation, an inspection of the vehicle must be requested in the Information sector, which is carried out, in the case of Montevideo, in the Reempadronamientos sector. At the end of the inspection, the owner must return to the Reports sector to be referred to the Revenue area, where at the end of the inspection, people are referred to the Control sector, where the procedure ends.
exceptions
Public vehicles, taxis, buses, school transport, must present the disaffection process of their previous department. Cargo carriers are not required to carry out this prior procedure.
Those cars dedicated to tourist activity must present another form at the Ministry of Transport before going to the corresponding Intendancy.
If it is a vehicle that is owned by a company, a notarial certificate with less than one year of validity must be delivered that certifies the name of the company, its RUT and the card of this number, and the name and data of a person authorized to sign. The procedure can also be carried out with a power of attorney, which must be certified by a lawyer with less than one year of validity.
