This has some consistency with the data collected by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), where it is observed that, in May, the prices of products such as jalapeño peppers, onions, lemons, carrots and apples had decreases in prices nationwide.
While other products such as oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, box bread, oil, among others, saw their prices rise between April and May.
“Food inflation, which has been hitting the household economy in recent times, at the end of May, is in a national price index above 7.72% and food inflation in more than 11.32%, Mexicans they have resisted and suffered one more month of limited and poor quality consumption,” ANPEC said in a statement.
The INEGI collects the price differences between the two months, while the ANPEC monitoring covers until June 12 and does not have the same geographical coverage. Therefore, there could be some discrepancy in both results.
Shortage of beer, paper and other basics
The ANPEC not only warned about how inflation, which reached an annual increase of 7.65% in May, is affecting the products of the basic basket. But it also warned about the shortage of various basic products such as toilet paper, edible oils, bottled water, soft drinks, beers, grains, among others.
“Both the modern and traditional channels begin to lack merchandise that was regularly part of their shelves, suffering from an irregular and late supply, leading their customers to repeatedly not be able to find what they are looking to buy. Every time we have a market with fewer products and there is a very thin line that divides scarcity from shortage,” said the president of ANPEC, Cuauhtémoc Rivera.
