Instead of troops, Ortega should "deal with seeking foreign investment for Nicaragua": Nobel Peace Prize

The two-time president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Óscar Arias, questioned the eventual arrival of Russian troops in Managua that could happen next month, amid concern and statements by leaders of the region, including the current Costa Rican president, Rodrigo Chavez.

Arias, who played an important role during the negotiation in the peace processes to end the armed conflicts that occurred in Central America in the 1980s, said that there are more urgent things in Nicaragua to attend to from the government.

“ANDn instead of dedicating oneself to seeking foreign investment in order to achieve greater growth in the Nicaraguan economy (…) [el gobierno de Daniel Ortega lo que está haciendo] it is by inviting the Russian military to come and carry out joint maneuvers with the Sandinista army in a country that is almost one of the poorest in Latin America,” he said.

In Costa Rica there are thousands of refugees as a result of the political crisis in Nicaragua that began in 2018. In fact, President Rodrigo Chaves recently told the voice of america that Costa Rica needed support to assist the migratory groups that have increased exponentially in their country.

Arias said that this increase in the number of refugees on Costa Rican soil has been a consequence of having “restricted freedom of expression” and other rights of Nicaraguans.

“Devoting their very scarce resources to buying weapons from [el presidente de Rusia, Vladimir] Putin and now to military maneuvers for, what do I know, send a message to washington. What do you get out of that when people are emigrating to Costa Rica and to other countries? When what they have to do is improve the quality of life of their people, health, education, infrastructure, people who possibly suffer from hunger,” Arias said in an interview with the Voice of America.

The former president of Costa Rica affirms that Otega “no longer has any shame to be called a dictator.”

“Democracy is over in Nicaragua and that, as a Costa Rican, causes me enormous pain because when we drafted the Peace Plan, democracy was a fundamental requirement for lasting peace and, well, we held elections in 1990. They were won by Doña Violeta (Barrios de Chamorro) and all that process that began has been reversed and today, unfortunately, what we have in Nicaragua is an atrocious dictatorship. That gives me immense pain,” he added.

Ortega “doesn’t listen to anyone”

Despite the arguments given, former president Óscar Arias insists that it is “worrying and painful.”

“He should be using the little resources he has to help people,” Arias said. “With a Russian tank you can’t feed anyone. The price of fuel and the cost of maintaining those tanks and other types of powerful, expensive weapons is money that is being stolen from the people of Nicaragua. And finally, what is the benefit of doing joint exercises with Russian soldiers?” he stated.

This Tuesday the approval for the entry of Russian troops is scheduled

The Nicaraguan National Assembly, dominated by the ruling party, will authorize the entry of Russian troops on Tuesday, at the request of President Daniel Ortega. Parliament President Gustavo Porras granted Ortega’s “urgent” procedure, so he will be submitted to the day’s session. The Parliament is mostly made up of pro-government deputies.

Previously, the agent’s request had been published in the Gazette.

The arguments of the Ortega government

The arrival of troops, according to Ortega’s request, seeks the “exchange of ships, aircraft, and foreign military personnel for purposes of exchange and mutually beneficial humanitarian assistance.”

Although the Nicaraguan government annually carries out cooperation agreements of this type, on this occasion it has caused criticism for the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine.

In fact, in response, the United States said that it is “strongly” analyzing excluding Nicaragua from the Free Trade Agreement, known as CAFTA, in response to President Daniel Ortega’s decree.

The ruling party has told the VOA that this is something “that occurs in all the countries of Latin America” and in response to the criticism, Deputy Wilfredo Navarro pointed out: “They are crazy that seek protagonism.”
