The Minister to the Presidency, Maria Nela Prada, gave more details on Tuesday about the Commission for the Review of Cases of Rape and Feminicide, announced this morning by President Luis Arce. Specifically, the authority reported that the first meeting will be held this week and said that “this is a state issue.”

“This is a State issue, that is how our president has defined it, so we are going to provide structural solutions, which is what Bolivian families expect,” Prada said, in the presence of the Government Minister, Eduardo del Castillo, and the Minister of Justice, Ivan Lima.

“Everyone is going to be heard: victims, families of victims, social organizations, civil society and all the institutions that want to contribute to this end. We are going to do justice for the victims. Now is now,” he concluded.

The first meeting will be held this Friday, at 9:00, and the commission will be made up of the Ministry of the Presidency, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Government, the president of the Chamber of Senators, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, the president of the Judicial Council, the president of the Constitutional Court, the State Attorney General and the State Attorney General.

The announcement comes amid strong social outrage over the recurring cases of femicide and the lack of judicial protection. This Monday, hundreds of people demonstrated in different parts of the country, demanding justice for the victims

At least 119 convicted or accused femicides and rapists are currently free thanks to benefits they received from the justice system, according to a report prepared by the Women in Search of Justice Service of the Mujeres Creando collective.

The document indicates that prosecutors, judges and lawyers use judicial vacations, guarantor payments and sick certificates to get out of prison and get benefits such as home detention without custody or parole.
