“There are lawsuits that are not filed and situations that are avoided.” It is not a scientific or philosophical quote, but a teaching of daily life and about the traffic accident in Bávaro with the fatal balance of five deceased tourists and dozens of injured.
It comes to mind for the course that this event that occurred two weeks ago has taken and that due to unpredictability and incompetence is still a subject of debate and, worse, with conflicting edges.
Precisely because of what tourism means for the country, elCaribe, almost instinctively and a few days later, suggested that there be no loose ends and that all sides be covered to get the issue off the agenda.
The Minister of Tourism has said, perhaps later than is advisable because already injured people had publicly implored for help, that the bills for the medical centers will be covered by the Dominican State and that ambulance planes have been arranged for those who have to be transferred to their countries.
That plausible support leaves a bad taste because it indicates that not everyone in the sector exhibits the same commitment. David Collado, without anyone asking him but with the “healthy” intention of making it known, stated that the Dominican State has assumed responsibilities that should, “perhaps, have been assumed by the Tourism Cluster and the tour operator that organized the trip.”
The other flank is that of the transport unions in the area. Even if the authorities are right, an open confrontation is not appropriate. That progress be made in the recertification of all companies and guarantee that they offer a quality service for which, it is assumed, they were contracted; but the other would be a lawsuit ill-married because it was inopportune.
Finally, a more complex variable, that of the courts. The Public Ministry is doing its part, but in a field as shaky as Justice, there is no certainty that there will be consequences because the pressures have begun to be felt, and hopefully in the face of such a painful event, which involves foreigners who came for our hospitality and attractions, let’s not tell the world that Justice here is given “assigned”.
