Fraud in the Army: Martial Court rejects bail for General (r) Óscar Izurieta

The Martial Court rejected, by three votes to two, granting bail for the former commander in chief of the Army, general (r) Oscar Izurieta Ferrerprosecuted for the crimes of embezzlement of public funds and forgery of military documents, in the framework of the Army Fraud case.

With the decision of the Court Martial, Izurieta will continue in preventive detention in the Peñalolén Military Police Battalion.

The visiting minister Romy Rutherfordwho is leading the investigations into the case, put the former commander-in-chief of the Army on trial.

The magistrate held, at this procedural stage, the general (r) responsible for the misuse of funds assigned to the institution for a total amount of $6,374,996,162, updated to date and corresponding to the period between March 2006 and March 2010.

In addition, Rutherford ordered the seizure of assets for a total amount of $6,500,000,000. Likewise, he ordered Izurieta’s admission to preventive detention in the Peñalolén Military Police Battalion.

In his statement before Rutherford, the general (r) pointed out that part of the diversion of money was directed to the family of the deceased dictator Augusto Pinochet.

In the details of the processing, it was indicated that these Pinochet expenses included having personnel at his disposal, such as doctors, nurses and escorts.

Izurieta pointed out that the dictator’s family was linked to the Army Garrison Command of the Metropolitan region. There “they were in charge of maintaining the entire escort, health and support system for the people who guarded and cared for General Pinochet.”
