Francisco will undergo emergency surgery due to risk of intestinal obstruction

He Pope Francisco He will be operated today at the Gemelli hospital in Rome due to the risk of intestinal obstruction and will have to be hospitalized for several days, the Vatican reported.

While the Pope calmly presided over the general audience on Wednesdays in Saint Peter’s Square, the Holy See reported that shortly after he would go to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, “where in the early afternoon he will undergo a laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prosthesis under general anesthesia.”

The Vatican explained that “the operation, arranged in recent days by the medical team assisting the pope, has become necessary because of an incarcerated incisional hernia that is causing recurrent, painful, and worsening subocclusive syndromes.”

The 86-year-old pontiff “will be hospitalized for several days to allow the normal postoperative course and full functional recovery,” added the Holy See.

The operation has been considered urgent after the results of the CT scan that he underwent this Tuesday and occurs after the colon intervention in July 2021.

Health problems

In a recent interview with the US news agency PAFrancisco revealed that he was suffering from diverticula again, the problem for which he had to be operated on and had a small part of his colon removed, but that he was in good health.

Francis underwent surgery in this Roman hospital on July 4, 2021 and was discharged after 10 days, followed by a slow recovery.

Pope Francis receives a medical discharge and returns to the Vatican

This is the third time that the pope has been admitted to the Roman hospital, as he was admitted for three nights at the end of March at the Gemelli hospital for “acute pneumonia.”

The other Pope suffers from a problem with his right knee that forces him to walk with a cane or a wheelchair and has assured on several occasions that he does not want to undergo surgery.
