Theodore Petkoff founder of the evening newspaper SuchWhich, currently a web portal, is remembered in many ways. While for some, the two-time candidate for the presidency of the Republic is an “eternal, but successful loser”, for others he was one of the greatest ministers (Cordiplan) that the nation has ever had, who even managed to plant a media who cared about politics but, above all, democracy.

During the forum “Teodoro Petkoff: An exceptional politician”, held at La Poeteca, Fernando Rodriguez, philosopher and former director of the UCV School of Philosophy; former president of the National Academy of History Agnes Quinterothe editorial board member of SuchWhich, Xavier Coscojuela and the internationalist Luis Angarita They talked about Petkoff’s career, political impact and historical significance.

The activity was sponsored by the Latin American Institute for Social Research and the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation-in Venezuela, which has been feeding, in podcast formata study of Petkoff’s intellectual contribution to national politics.

«Venezuelan democracy had in Teodoro Petkoff one of its fiercest critical combatants and his initial defense against the military dictatorship (1948-1958) was transformed into guerrilla dissent in the 1960s. But he is also the man who In the mid-1990s, he opted for decentralization, a change in the production model, and profound economic reforms as an official in the second government of Rafael Caldera, who had released him in 1969 in the midst of the so-called Pacification”, reads the portal of the German institution.

a balanced medium

«Teodoro wanted to make an open and broad medium in which even the positions of Chavismo were reflected. He wanted it to be a medium with a clear position and that it be the most balanced in the midst of what was happening in the country », commented Xabier Coscojuela during the event, which brought together a significant number of the public who followed the political ideas of the author of the book Czechoslovakia, socialism as a problema work that at that time represented a watershed in the understanding of the left in Venezuela.

Coscojuela maintained that in this effort, Petkoff achieved a credible, honest media outlet and that it became an example of what a media outlet should be.

For her part, the researcher Inés Quintero asserted that Teodoro Petkoff was characterized by his historical permanence and his political relevance.

«Theodoro’s ideas did not have to do with the contingent but with the underlying problems. They had to do with a position on problems that transcended his political problems », he detailed.

He affirmed that the fact that he could not have been a popular politician does not rule him out with respect to the historical significance he has as an intellectual and politician of contemporary Latin American thought.

Fernando Rodríguez, a personal friend of Petkoff, affirmed that Teodoro was a kind of “eternal defeated” and, nevertheless, he was one of the greatest politicians that Venezuela produced in the 20th century and even in its entire history.

«That gentleman who lost so many battles is one of the most important men of our times. How did he do it? For example, when talking about his defeat in the armed struggle, people remember him for two escapes that were like Hollywood movies, “he said.

He mentioned that perhaps Teodoro’s problem is that he failed to reach the Venezuelan masses. “Although it is true that he was a great Samson of that Venezuela, for some reason he did not manage to pass the historical 6%, that is, popular support,” he added.

The forum “Teodoro Petkoff: An exceptional politician” was held on the afternoon of October 27 on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of his death on Monday, October 31.

Meanwhile, the internationalist Luis Angarita stressed that the figure and legacy of Teodoro Petkoff leaves in the nation the importance of continuing to build the country and the demand for democracy, tolerance and the rejection of authoritarianism.

“I have Teodoro in mind as a man capable of generating state-building debates and of doing things with high political costs, such as opening oil. Those decisions and debates spoke of the height and ideology that he had in his political action », he said.
