Four workers from the Antonio Guiteras power plant are trapped after a collapse in their chimney

Four workers who worked inside the chimney of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant, in Matanzas, were buried when “the partition, a seven-meter-high wall” collapsed inside, official media reported. So far, two people have been rescued alive and the “Fire Department, together with specialized forces,” are working to remove rubble where the other two trapped workers are, he said. TV Yumuri.

According to this media outlet, the state employees were working in an “area known for an ashtray where they extracted soot” and were doing “other cleaning tasks” when the partition collapsed around 2:30 p.m.

Regarding the two injured, it was reported that both receive medical attention at the Faustino Pérez Provincial Hospital in the city of Matanzas. One was diagnosed with “simple head trauma and dislocation of the head and right radius.” The second injured person continues to be examined for a “possible right hip and tibia fracture.”

At the end of last month and after a failure that caused the exit of the National Electric System plant, the official press announced that the authorities foresee a capital repair in Guiteras at the end of this year.

The chimney of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant is 150 meters high

“Not all the causes or all the problems are going to be solved. These are works that have to be carried out in capital maintenance, which can last up to six months,” said engineer Edier Guzmán Pacheco, director of Thermal Generation of the Unión Eléctrica, to the Explain that the work they are currently doing at the thermoelectric plant is provisional.

“We are going to increase reliability, we are going to make the block as stable as possible, but all these elements would be resolved in capital maintenance, which is expected to be carried out by the end of 2023,” added Guzmán Pacheco.

The Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant, located about 10 kilometers from the Matanzas Supertankers, was founded in March 1988 and is currently out of service for repairs. Its chimney has a height of 150 meters.

The report of the electrical union this Friday points to more blackouts in the country with an estimate available at peak hours of 2,594 MW against a maximum demand of 2,700 MW, for a deficit of 106 MW, “so if the forecast conditions are maintained, an affectation of 176 is forecast MW at this time”.

Currently, in addition to Guiteras, units 5 and 6 of the CTE Nuevitas, unit 3 of the CTE Renté and unit 2 of the CTE Felton are out of service due to breakdowns. Likewise, unit 3 of the CTE Santa Cruz, unit 4 of the CTE Cienfuegos and units 4 and 6 of the CTE Renté are under maintenance.
