Given the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, together with the decision of countries such as the United States, France and Germany to repatriate their compatriots, the former president of the Foreign Relations Commission, Jorge Tarud, called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to think about the Chileans who live in Ukraine and offer them the possibility of leaving the country.
“The situation in Ukraine is highly volatile and dangerous. There are an estimated 30 Chilean compatriots residing in that country and, given this situation, I make a fervent appeal to the Government of Chile, particularly the Foreign Ministry, to offer help to those who wish to leave the country,” said Tarud.
The also former ambassador to Saudi Arabia assured that he lived firsthand “what it means to be in a state of war in the first Gulf War as Chilean ambassador and, therefore, I helped and ordered all my compatriots to leave the country before an imminent war”.
“We must act now, offer them help and fulfill Chile’s duty, as many countries in the world are doing,” Tarud said.
