For labor abuse: Government decides to lower Matilde Báez from the Antofagasta Education Seremi

The Ministry of Educationthrough a public statement, indicated that the government decided to lower Matilde Baez from the position of Seremi of Education in Antofagasta, after two complaints of labor mistreatment that were filed last month with the Provincial Directorate of Education and that occurred within his first 19 days of exercise in said regional secretariat.

According to the accusation, the Mineduc stated in its statement that “respect for the dignity of public officials is a fundamental value for us as a Government, that is why we will ensure respect for their person and their work” , they indicated, confirming the departure of the chosen seremi.

President, Gabriel Boric, appointed on March 17, Matilde Báez, a 70-year-old retired teacher, as the new Education Seremi of the region. To do this, she was presented as a teacher with extensive experience in classrooms and in management positions in schools in Antofagasta.

However, despite her record, those who received her at the secretariat pointed out that from the first day she had friction and discussions with the office officials. In this way, the complaints were made official through a document sent by the Secreduc Antofagasta Provincial Directory, addressed to Undersecretary Nicolás Cataldo.

“In accordance with the provisions of the Administrative Statute, Law 19,296, (…), we send you two complaints of labor abuse, directed against the SEREMI of Education, Mrs. Matilde Báez Romero, which are being sponsored by our directory of ANDIME (National Association of Mineduc Officials) ”, previously indicated the document, before which, it was decided not to confirm the continuity of the teacher in the position.

In detail, an official from the regional ministerial secretary, who was in conversation with The counter, He maintained that since he arrived, he did so with an “overwhelming” and “controlling” attitude, which was strengthened over time. To the extent that until today, there is more than one summary of labor mistreatment of the former seremi towards officials of the institution.

In that sense, it all started with Báez wanting to “change all the people” who worked in the office. He “he wanted to put more than 10 people” new, asking them to get him “all the resumes”.

“Seeing that most of us were under contract, he understood that it was not that easy. She does not understand how it works, she does not understand that there are unions, that she denounces, so she thought that it was to arrive and change, and when she was involved in the fact that today, 2022, it is not like that, she started with mistreatment and that was the way for us to leave, to change. She has an ignorance of how the ministries work”, she emphasized.

From that moment on, the situation began to worsen, since, according to what the official indicated, Báez watched to see if the workers were in their offices, and ‘yelled’ at those who were not at their posts, too, I canceled spokespersons because I didn’t know what to say to the press.

Another of the abuses attributed to the teacher is linked to the generation of rumors among the officials themselves, which led to a bad work environment. “It generated environments of rumors. If you were going to explain something to her about information at the central level, she would start talking about your physical aspects, your attitude.

Likewise, the SEREMI had to cancel various spokespersons, because Báez did not know what to say regarding the issues that afflict the commune, where the rains in El Loa have kept the schools in the area closed, violence increased in the establishments in Antofagasta and the paralysis of teachers in San Pedro occurs, due to the fact that students “go to classes in containers in Toconao”, it was denounced.

As he maintains Mercury AntofagastaGiven the forceful complaints of mistreatment and labor abuse, the SEREMI Matilde Báez said she had no history of the accusations against her, so she did not want to give statements in this regard.
