Horacio Cartes and his movement “Honor Colorado” were the big winners of last Sunday’s elections. This, despite being declared significantly corrupt by the United States on July 22.
Víctor Raúl Benítez, a political analyst, pointed out that until now the warnings from the United States against Cartes have had no effect. “There are analysts who warn that an extradition request may be coming that could change the landscape. When that request comes, Cartes could already be shielding if the president is Peña, “he commented.
Another scenario that could occur is that extradition is requested before the 2023 elections. If this occurs, the Concertación may win.
«The extradition comes before the elections and he goes to prison in the United States. Another scenario is that he comes after the elections with which Peña will try to shield Cartes. That would change relations between the United States and Paraguay,” he commented.
He argued that the Paraguayan got used to corruption, so he looks for other things when choosing his authorities.
