Endometriosis, a disease that is rarely talked about and that thousands of women in Colombia and in the world suffer from and that has been hidden behind the so-called ‘menstrual cramps’.
News Colombia.
On Wednesday, March 29, the Senate plenary approved the last debate on the bill that will create public policy for the prevention, timely diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment of Endometriosis, since its treatment is almost nil in the country and elsewhere, because it is shield in ‘menstrual cramps’.
It is a chronic and incurable condition that affects one in 10 women worldwide.
According to the Colombian Association of Endometriosis and Infertility, about 3.5 million women suffer from it.
This initiative seeks not only to guarantee patients with a diagnosis or presumption of Endometriosis access to the necessary therapies for the treatment of the disease.
This is a serious disease that deserves more attention and requires public policies so that patients receive adequate treatment and timely diagnosis. DON’T EVER allow them to tell you that your pain is normal, support yourself in a support network JOIN the Association pic.twitter.com/CmYdh63NSf

Also, that it is known as a chronic and disabling condition, for which reason special protection measures will be created for people who suffer from it, especially in the workplace and education.
“With this law we want to create a public policy to reduce diagnostic times, to comprehensively treat the millions of women who today suffer from this disease, guaranteeing them a life without pain,” said Nadia Blel, senator.
What is Endometriosis?
It is a condition in which the tissue that normally recovers inside the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside the uterus in other parts of the body.
This can include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, abdominal lining, and other nearby organs.
During the menstrual cycle, the endometrium thickens to prepare for the possible carrying of a fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized, the endometrium is shed and is expelled from the body through menstruation.
However, in endometriosis, the endometrial tissue outside the uterus also thickens and bleeds during the menstrual cycle, but is unable to leave the body.
This can cause inflammation, pain, scarring, and other health problems.
Although Colombia does not have an official registry to determine the number of patients suffering from the disease, according to the Colombian Association of Endometriosis and Infertility, ASOCOEN, close to 3.5 million women suffer from it in the country.
