Five 11J protesters released in Santa Clara

Havana Cuba. – This Wednesday, five protesters of July 11, 2021 (11J) from Santa Clara were released, among them the young Andy García Lorenzoas reported to CubaNet the activist Roxana García Lorenzo.

The young woman explained that all those released received a change of measure and that they will be able to spend several days with their family before entering open institutions, known as camps, where they will have to serve the rest of their respective sentences.

In addition to Andy García Lorenzo, Jose Miguel Gómez Mondeja, Jorge Gabriel Arruebarruena León, Lázaro Alejandro Rodríguez Ruíz and Ariel Núñez Martínez were also released. All had been sentenced to four years in prison last April.

García Lorenzo was violently arrested on 11J and accused of “public disorder” and “disrespect.” He had a fiscal request of seven years of deprivation of liberty, he was tried in January of this year along with 15 other 11J protesters in the same province, and sentenced to four years in prison.

Until now, he was serving his sentence in the maximum security prison of Guamajal, near Santa Clara.

After more than 10 months behind bars, the 24-year-old has been subjected to at least 13 types of torture and ill-treatment according to Prisoners Defenders (PD), in retaliation against him and his family for allegations of human rights violations against political and common prisoners.

“I must emphasize that we are going to continue denouncing because they are still political prisoners,” said Roxana García in reference to the five released.

At the beginning of May, some six 11J protesters from San Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, were also released, including Yoan de la Cruz, who broadcast the protests in his town live.

Days before, Prisoners Defenders reported that six other young people convicted of the 11J protests in the province of Holguín were also imprisoned. All of them had their prison sentence commuted to house arrest.

According to the Justice 11J task force, at least 730 of the 1,470 people arrested on 11J remain behind bars. Of this total, 564 have been tried and 519 sentenced, 40 await sentences and only five have been acquitted.
