Fernando Alvarado is summoned to a hearing 3 years after his escape

The former Secretary of Communication took off the electronic shackle and fled in October 2018. He breached the order of the competent authority.

The criminal judge Giovanny Freire decided to install the audience of filing of charges against the former Secretary of Communication of Correismo, Fernando Alvarado, for the alleged crime of non-compliance with legitimate decisions of the competent authority. This crime is punishable by up to three years in prison, according to Article 282 of the current Penal Code.

The diligence takes place three years and four months after the former official removed the electronic shackle and fled the country in October 2018. Alvarado He has been active on social media.

The audience is convened at 09:00 on Friday, January 28, 2022. The judge ordered that it be installed via telematics; that is, the defendant may attend the proceedings from anywhere in the world. At this time, the whereabouts of the defendant are unknown. The Prosecutor’s Office had requested, in November 2021, that the day and time for the diligence be established. This, once the preliminary investigation was finished.

The crime charged is due to the withdrawal of the electronic surveillance device. On October 20, 2018, it was confirmed that the former official had retired on fetter. That action, plus the warning of leakage of the country, made a police contingent deploy on highways and borders to capture him, which never happened.

He was facing an investigation for alleged embezzlement of public funds for the hiring of equipment for the production of citizen links from 2013 to 2017. For this process, he was declared innocent in 2020 by the National Court of Justice.

the escape of Alvarado raised suspicions about the operation of the shackles and about the possible complicity of people who worked in monitoring.

The Prosecutor’s Office will not issue charges against six more people who had been investigated. Among them is Víctor Ortega, a former undersecretary of the attention service for prisoners (Snai), who was investigated for this cause. His lawyer, Paúl Ocaña, pointed out that the agents who are in this case thought that it had something to do with the flight of Alvarado, but that idea was scrapped. (DPV)
