Santo Domingo.- The women’s ministerMayra Jiménez, described as “painful” that the approval of the Penal Code with the three grounds for abortion is still being debated in the Dominican National Congress.
Jiménez indicated that Congress has a “very large debt” with Dominican women, since, in his opinion, a Penal Code is needed to guarantee women’s human rights, so if it does not include the grounds, it would lack warranty.
“That we are still discussing at this level if women are not respected that right to our health, to our dignity, and being able to decide is painful and I think that the National Congress has a very large debt with Dominican women” , said this Wednesday during his participation in the Weekly Lunch of the Corripio Communications Group.
He argued that Dominican society does not deserve the approval of the Penal Code behind women’s backs, when there are also many men who, in their roles as fathers, brothers, sons or husbands, are in favor.
“I think that approving a CP behind the back of women is not what we deserve as a society, and I say society because I know that there are also thousands of men who are in favor of the causes,” he said.

She indicated that, for any legislation, respect for people is very important, so it is unthinkable that this code be approved in the country without considering the “minimum weight” of women’s right to decide, “especially because it is sometimes between deciding whether to live or die”.
