Federation of Teachers: 16,000 schools are in “terrible conditions”

The 16,000 schools represent 70% of all educational institutions in the country. Most have electricity or water failures or do not have working toilets. On October 3, academic activities begin progressively for all educational levels, a date that was reiterated by President Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday 20, while he asked to have the repairs of the schools ready for that day.

Carmen Teresa Márquez, general secretary of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (FVM), reported that 16,000 educational institutions in the country are in “terrible conditions,” and many schools do not have the conditions to start the 2022-2023 school year.

The leader commented that this figure is equivalent to 70% of all schools in the national territory that should be remodeled. For this reason, she demanded that the Government report the reality of what is happening with the repair work being carried out in schools.

Márquez asserted that “what they are placing are some hot cloths, most of them are destroyed, without furniture, looted by the underworld, without bathrooms, without electricity, without water, they are not suitable to receive the student population.”

The teachers have denounced that as long as the pending payments that have kept them protesting throughout the vacation period are not resolved, they will not return to the classroom.

Over the weekend, Education Minister Yelitze Santaella published the academic schedule for the new 2022-2023 school year. She via Twitter, she indicated that from September 19 to 30, the administrative staff, teachers and workers resume their work for the registration process and school setting.

The October 3 academic activities begin progressively for all educational levels, a date that was reiterated by President Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday the 20th, while he asked to have the repairs of the schools ready for that day.

Maduro relies on the military community brigades to carry out repairs in schools, a project framed in the 1×10 of the Good Government. «Before, everything was resolved by rialazos (sic) but the rials did not arrive (…) Now it is impossible. Now we don’t have (the money) but we also have a new method that is with the help of the working and working class.
