The plenary of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) confirmed today (29) a new authorization for sending federal military personnel to municipalities in Amazonas. The troops will guard the polling places in the first round of the elections, which will be held on Sunday (2).
With the decision, the number of locations in the country that will have the support of the military rose to 575 to guarantee the logistics of distribution of the ballot boxes and the security of the election.
Locations in 11 states will receive the troops – Acre, Alagoas, Amazonas, Ceará, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Maranhão, Pará, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro and Tocantins.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the body responsible for logistics, military personnel from the Navy, Army and Air Force will guarantee the security of electoral areas and assist in the logistics of distributing electronic voting machines and transporting personnel to communities located in rural areas, indigenous and riverine.
The deployment of federal troops occurs when a municipality informs the Electoral Court that it is not able to guarantee the normality of the election with the local police force.
In August, Presidential Decree 11,172 authorized the use of the Armed Forces to guarantee voting and the counting of elections.
In the 2018 elections, 513 locations in 11 states had the presence of the military.
