Father Bayardo Ocón is released, after mediation with a cyclist

The father Bayardo Aguilar Oconfrom the Divino Niño Jesús parish in the municipality of El Viejo, in Chinandega, was released this Friday morning, May 5, after reaching a mediation agreement with the cyclist Enrique José Hernández García, revealed The Press.

The Prosecutor’s Office had accused the priest for the crime of minor injuries, to the detriment of Hernández García, because on Monday, May 1, the priest was driving a vehicle and had an accident in which the cyclist was hit.

The road accident occurred at kilometer 134 of the Managua-El Viejo highway. According to the accusation, Father Aguilar disregarded the red light of a traffic light that is at the site where the traffic accident occurred.

Article 66 learned that the priest was arrested on Tuesday, May 2; while the following day he was taken to a preliminary hearing before the Chinandega First Local Court, where Judge Emma Chavarría decided to leave the priest in pretrial detention.

José Alfonso Calero, the prelate’s lawyer, confirmed to La Prensa the release of Father Bayardo Aguilar, who promised to pay for the damage caused to Enrique José Hernández García’s bicycle.

“The father’s measure (of preventive detention) has already been changed, he is free,” said the defender.

On the other hand, the lawyer clarified that the cyclist whom the priest accidentally ran over is not a police officer. “The cyclist is not a policeman as they said on social networks, he is Father Daniel’s cousin (another priest) and is part of a very Catholic family,” he said.
