Before the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, the 76th Conmebol Congress made a fervent defense and asked for unanimous support for the joint candidacy of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile to organize the 2030 World Cupin honor of the centenary of the first Cup played on Uruguayan soil.
In the middle of the assembly and in the presence of the world soccer boss, the delegates of the 10 South American countries stood in front of their seats and raised with both hands shirts with the legend “Together 2030 for 100 years: Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile”.
In this way they expressed to the guest of honor of the meeting the desire of the South Americans to once again become the hosts of the biggest event in world soccer.
The return to South America of the World Cup, thanks to the triumph of Argentina in Qatar 2022after 20 years of European monopoly since the trophy was in the hands of Brazil in Korea-Japan 2002, supports the campaign.
“If we talk and get together we have the opportunity for FIFA to shine. We want the World Cup (2030) because we have to honor history. We are preparing and we will be ready,” said the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, during his message to Congress and with special attention to Infantino.
“I want you to find the way to that we can all celebrate together in South America the 100 years of the World Cup”, remarked the manager of Conmebol, applauded by the audience at its permanent headquarters in Asunción. “It’s not just the World Cup. It’s the Centennial Cup,” he specified.
Domínguez asked to open a table for talks with the presidents of the five confederations to convince them to grant the place to South America by mutual agreement.
“We want a dialogue table to open through you. We want to dialogue and give history a chance,” he emphasized.
Infantino replied: I like that ‘we’re going to do it together’ concept.”
“The 2026 World Cup will serve us all as an experience for 2030. We have many challenges in the future but they are all beautiful. There is great interest in the world of organizing (worldwide). The task of the leaders must be this: try to unite, lead, all go forward together for the good of football in South America and the world,” said the FIFA headline.
Infantino praised the South American organization, congratulated Argentina for obtaining the world championship and recalled the magic of Pelé, Maradona and Messi, whom he considered “legends of soccer”.
