Face to face

Humanity gives worrying signs in the sense that there are first class and second class citizens. And sometimes not even that, as is the case with migrants who flee their destroyed countries and look for others to welcome them. They don’t even have a citizenship card. However, the drama of these stateless people goes beyond whether or not they have immigration papers. Their greatest misfortune is not being important to humanity.

This sad reality is made us see by the poet Amanda Gorman, whose sublime ability to write poems has now been used to reflect on humans about the differential treatment given to the five millionaires who perished in the OceanGate submersible, trying to reach the Titanic. , and to the more than 600 migrants whose boat named Adriana capsized in the Mediterranean Sea one dark night, trying to reach Greece.

In the first case, several countries spent resources and mobilized to try to find those five explorers alive. Instead, some countries, knowing that this boat packed with men, women and children ran the risk of capsizing, did nothing. And what was feared happened: a kind of Titanic shipwreck, just as atrocious, but less famous. And the rest of humanity did not give much importance to that loss of human beings either. In her article, Amanda Gorman quoted a headline that says it all: “Five deaths at sea shocked the world. Hundreds of other deaths only got a shrug of the shoulders.”
