FA senators asked that Heber and Bustillo “step aside”

Bench of senators of the Broad Front (FA) presented a statement early this Tuesday morning calling for the resignation of the ministers of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber and Public Relations, Francisco Bustillo for considering “absolutely unsatisfactory and unacceptable” the explanations they gave during the interpellation summoned by the delivery of a passport to the narco Uruguayan Sebastián Marset when in November 2021 he was imprisoned in Dubai after traveling with false documentation.

In that sense, the motion requests that the upper house withdraw confidence from the ministers. “It is understood that these Ministers do not have the confidence of this Body. Therefore, it is appropriate that they take a step to the side, ”the text ends. That it did not have the votes of the government coalition -which supported the Secretaries of State- and it was not approved.

“The convened authorities should have assumed their political responsibility instead of wielding mere administrative and bureaucratic arguments,” says the statement signed by the opposition legislators at the end of an interpellation that lasted more than 12 hours. “Throughout the interpellation, the authorities did not take responsibility for the accumulation of errors made,” adds the FA.

Opposition senators warn that “given the exposed evidence, it is unjustifiable for the ministers to declare that no one knew who the passport applicant was until March 2022, the date on which the international requisition was given, despite being investigated by the institution itself. Policeman”.

“The ministers understand that they did everything right”

At a press conference this Monday night, the questioning member, Mario Bergara, had said that “clear explanations are lacking” from the members of the cabinet. “The ministers understand that they did everything right. And the ministers deny that this is an episode that in any way affects Uruguay’s reputation at the international level and that it affects credibility with the public. That seems very worrying to us,” Bergara said.

In addition, they consider that the meeting between the undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, Carolina Ache, and the lawyer Alejandro Balbi, representative of Marset, cannot go unnoticed.
