The Minister of Housing, Irene Moreirais in the eye of the hurricane after the deputy of the Broad Front (FA), Cecilia Cairowill qualify the award as “terrible” direct from a house to a open council member by the minister. Cairo denounced that this type of action is a clear example of “pure patronage.”
In an interview with UnderlinedCairo assured that the minister does not have the power to decide who are awarded the housesand that the only way to do so is through agreements signed by the Ministry with other State agencies to cases of “maximum urgency”. In these cases, the technical services of the Ministry seek housing for families with socioeconomic precariousness.
However, the case in question was not a situation of extreme urgency. Cairo denounced that the minister had requested a personal quota for a particular house, and that she had even reserved the quota in the name of the Cabildo Abierto militant.
This type of action is unacceptable, according to her, and goes against the principles of transparency and fairness in the allocation of housing.
Moreira compensates for the accusations
In response to the accusations, Minister Moreira stated that she had received requests from leaders of the Broad Front to award housing. However, Cairo explained that this is only done in extreme situations or to reactivate settlement relocation procedures, and not to benefit political militants.
This scandal has highlighted the importance of transparency and fairness in housing adjudication. Authorities must take steps to ensure that housing is allocated fairly and equitably, regardless of political affiliation or any other factor.
