The fifth wave of covid-19 infections in Mexico is in phase very fastand although a large part of the population is already vaccinated or has antibodies from having overcome the disease, care measures must be maintained, as there will be new hospitalizations and deaths, and the emergence of new variants cannot be ruled out.

In a forum organized yesterday by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mauricio Rodríguez Álvarez, an academic from the Faculty of Medicine, pointed out that at this time everything that looks like a cold or flu is highly likely to be covid, and as the days go by, the probability increases. That is why you have to isolate yourself immediately, avoid infecting others and seek a diagnosis. to confirm the presence of the virus.

Samuel Ponce de León, coordinator of the UNAM COVID-19 Response Commission, confirmed that the country is already in the fifth wave of the pandemic, with an average of 15,000 new infections per day and at least 108,500. confirmed active cases.

omicron predominates

The infection resembles a common flu in people who have had the disease and/or with complete vaccination and booster schedules. It is similar to what was seen in the fourth wave, between last January and February, when ómicron was already the variant with the largest circulation in national territory, the specialist commented.

In the past nine weeks, in which the rebound in cases has been observed, the majority of those affected have presented symptoms such as those mentioned, that is, mild symptoms that resolve in four to five days with outpatient management.

On the other hand, in the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, where people with serious conditions arrive, the constant continues to be unvaccinated individuals or with incomplete schemes. Also, patients with other decompensated diseases and/or older adults.
