Exile on possible congressman’s visit to Cuba: “This is not the time for concessions!”

MIAMI, United States. — Representatives of the Cuban exile community in the United States reacted to the possible visit to the Island of Congressman Gregory Meeks.

One of the first to reject the possible visit was Cuban-American María Elvira Salazar, who represents Florida’s 27th district.

“I was informed that Democratic colleagues are planning a trip to Cuba to meet with the regime. I am horrified. Flattering tyrants has never given good results,” the legislator said in a statement.

María Elvira described Meeks’ possible visit to Cuba as “another disgusting show of sympathy towards the regime, which has increased repression after the protests of July 11, 2021.”

“The visit does not reflect the will of Cubans on the Island or of Cuban-Americans in the United States. It is an act to please the dictatorship and its radical sympathizers”.

Congressman Gregory Meeks has represented the 5th District of New York State since 1998 and was recently part of the delegation that accompanied the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan.

“Congressman Gregory Meeks traveled to Taiwan with Nancy Pelosi to support the Taiwanese people’s fight for democracy. However, he stands by the Cuban dictators as the regime brutalizes and imprisons people who dissent, particularly black Cubans,” Cuban activist Salomé García Bacallao said on Twitter.

In this sense, the young exile called on other politicians with Cuban roots to condemn Meeks’ possible visit to the island.

“Congressmen Albio Sires (New Jersey) and Nicole Malliotakis (New York) are also Cuban Americans who are members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives and should also speak out against this new attempt to normalize relations with the regime,” he added. the activist
