Every 14 accidents one person dies in Cuba

MIAMI, United States. – From January to May of this year, an average of 27 daily accidents have occurred in Cuba and one person has died for every 14 accidents. Every day, in addition, two people have died and 30 have been injured on the road, according to the official newspaper published this Wednesday Granma.

The statistics were offered at a press conference by Colonel Mario Ríos Labrada, head of the Vehicle Registration Department of the National Traffic Directorate.

In total, from January to May of this year, 4,062 accidents have occurred on the Island, which means growth when compared to the statistics for 2020 and 2021; and a decrease if the figures registered in 2017, 2018 and 2019 are taken into account.

According to Ríos Labrada, 81% of the Cuban provinces grew in the three main indicators of accidents. However, Holguín and Camagüey accumulate the highest number of victims and average deaths from accidents.

In the more than 4,000 accidents, 6,755 vehicles were involved. 73% of them, which belonged to the state sector, were responsible for 54% of the claims.

In the case of motorcycles and mopeds, the cause of more than half of the events was not respecting the right of way, according to Ríos Labrada.

The head of the Vehicle Registration Department of the National Traffic Directorate also specified that the human factor continues to determine 89% of accidents. The causes of the high accident rateaccording to the official, are not attending to the control of the vehicle, violating the right of way, speeding, technical malfunctions and the ingestion of alcoholic beverages.

In general, he highlighted the following elements as the most significant in the incidence of accidents in Cuba:

– The collision of vehicles in motion continues to be the type of accident with the highest incidence.

– The running over of pedestrians maintains the persistent danger, causing one death every six events of this type.

– The deterioration of the road registered an increase, reporting potholes or breakages in 333 cases.

– Saturdays (606), followed by Wednesdays (589) and Fridays (585) were the days with the highest occurrence, and in which 43.3% of the victims accumulate.

– Between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. most of the events occurred; however, the greatest danger is between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. with 60 deaths (19.9%).

– In 6% (242) of responsible drivers the presence of alcohol was reported.
