ETECSA and Orange SA sign an agreement to extend an internet submarine cable to Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba.- The Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA) announced this wednesday the signing of an agreement with the French company Orange S.A..which “will allow the expansion and diversification of international capacities in the face of the growing demand for Internet connection and broadband services on the Island.”

According to the published note, “it is a submarine cable system deployed by ORANGE, through its subsidiary Orange Marine, which will connect the Caribbean island of Martinique with the province of Cienfuegos, and whose capacity will allow ETECSA to support its international expansion ”.

The physical structure of the cable will be ready by 2023 and will allow the state telecommunications monopoly to expand international connectivity, as well as improve the services of all networks on the Island.

ETECSA further explained that, “at this time, the project is under development and has all the permits for its deployment; once it becomes effective, the entities involved will expand the information”.

Recently, the United States Department of Justice recommended The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny permission for the installation of the first submarine telecommunications cable that would connect the northern country and Cuba.

The Committee for the Evaluation of Foreign Participation in the Telecommunications Services Sector, known as Team Telecom, advised the Federal Communications Commission to reject the application of ARCOS-1 USA Inc. and A.SurNet Inc., after alleging that “Cuba represents risks to national security [de Estados Unidos] and a counterintelligence threat.”

The Island’s regime exercises control over all internet services, websites and virtual private servers, community networks and private networks, as well as telecommunications contracts. Meanwhile, ordinary Cubans continue to pay for an expensive, unstable and insecure service without being able to choose or have other options.
