1894 – FIRST RACE. Between the French cities of Paris and Rouen, the first race in the history of motorsports is held, in which 21 competitors participated. It was organized by journalist Pierre Giffard, a pioneer of modern political journalism and a prolific organizer of sporting events, including the Paris Marathon.
1932 – OSCAR DE LA RENTA. Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta was born in Santo Domingo. He achieved worldwide fame in the 1960s as one of the couturiers of Jacqueline Kennedy, former first lady of the United States.
1934 – JOHN DILLINGER. Bank robber John Dillinger, the most wanted criminal in the United States, is shot to death in the city of Chicago by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who considered him “public enemy number one” and the most wanted gangster in the country.
1944 – MONETARY FUND. In the hotel complex of Bretton Woods (New Hampshire, USA) the economic conference of the United Nations ends in which the creation of the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, better known as the World Bank, its “entity twin”.
1962 – ULISES BUTRÓN. The rock musician, guitarist, singer and producer Ulises Butrón was born in Buenos Aires and recorded more than 20 albums. He was the voice of singer-songwriter Tanguito (Luis Alberto Iglesias) in the 1993 film Tango Feroz, directed by Marcelo Piñeyro.
1955 – WILLIAM DAFOE. The American actor William James Dafoe was born in the city of Appleton (Wisconsin, USA). He has made more than 100 films, including the successful Mississippi Burning, The English Patient and Born on the 4th of July. In 2018 he won the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for his work in the film At eternity’s gate.
1990 – MANUEL PUIG. At the age of 57, the Argentine writer Manuel Puig dies in the Mexican city of Cuernavaca, author of eight great novels, including “Boquitas pintadas” (1969), made into a film by director Leopoldo Torre Nilsson in 1974. Puig was the founder of the Frente Gay liberation.
1992 – SELENA GOMEZ. The singer and actress Selena Gomez, famous for her role in the series Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel television channel, was born in the city of Grand Prairie (Texas, USA). He has released three albums and sold more than seven million copies. She is an ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
2009 – TOTAL ECLIPSE. The longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century is recorded, covering regions of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean. It had a total duration of six minutes and 38 seconds, a mark that will not be exceeded until the one scheduled for June 13, 2132.
2022 – WORLD BRAIN DAY. World Brain Day is celebrated, instituted by the World Federation of Neurology in search of highlighting the importance of health and prevention of brain diseases.
