Santo Domingo. – The National Council of Private Enterprise (CONEP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have received more than 130 initiatives and recognized more than 50 business practices through the three editions of the Catalog of Promising Practices, an initiative that seeks to highlight the actions of the Dominican private sector to promote the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs).
The information was disclosed by Inka Mattila, UNDP resident representative during the presentation of the third Catalog 2022. “More than a Catalog, Promising Practices has become a multi-stakeholder and multi-level business process that projects and promotes prominent initiatives that are generating a positive impact on sustainable development in the triple axis of prosperity, people and planet in the country”, he indicated.
In his welcoming remarks, Pedro Brache, president of CONEP, stated that “the Promising Practices that we have known and recognized since 2020 represent the achievable promise of a better future. A future that companies that operate with a sustainable vision are building, aware that doing business that is respectful of the environment, with a sense of equity and inclusion, generates collective and multiplier well-being, ”he said.
The conference was closed by Cesar Dargam, executive vice president of CONEP, who congratulated all the companies that submitted their projects and the winners in this edition. Likewise, he affirmed that the Promising Practices initiative “presents a message of inspiration, optimism and hope, which is transmitted by evidencing the commitment of more and more companies, of different sizes and diverse sectors, to contribute to sustainable, resilient and inclusive development”. .
The private sector is increasingly looking for new opportunities to make an impact, mitigate risks and contribute significantly to sustainable development. This catalog compiles the work that the country’s private sector is carrying out in terms of sustainability, with the aim of motivating more companies to integrate the vision of the 2030 Agenda into the core of their business models and decision-making.
Promising initiatives 2022
The initiatives recognized in the modality of medium and large companies this third edition were: EGE Haina International Inaugural Bonus; Popular Excellence of Banco Popular Dominicano; Alternatives for organic fertilization of sugarcane to replace chemical fertilizers from the CAEI Consortium; Roadmap for the reduction of emissions of Gerdau Metaldom; Let’s Undertake Together with Coca-Cola of the Coca-Cola System Dominican Republic; CORMIDOM’s Soil Preservation and Water Planting Program in the Río Sin Micro-watershed; Center for Child Diversity (CEDI) of Grupo Puntacana; Circularity system for two-gallon containers of BON Ice Cream.
In addition, Future Vision of DP World Caucedo; Banking is the Homeland of Banreservas; CEPM District Energy of the Punta Cana – Macao Energy Consortium; Environmental and Social Risk Management System for the granting of financing raises awareness in risk management to its clients of Banco BHD; APAP Carbon Neutral of the Popular Association of Savings and Loans; InterEnergy Systems’ Evergo; Biomass Boiler of the Nestlé Dominicana.
Meanwhile, the initiatives of Green Depot; Electric Motors; Green Love; SOS Carbon and Zero by ecopaolatineo were winners of the micro and small business modality.
The 20 initiatives of this 2022 were selected from a total of 52 applications based on their level of connection with the SDGs; strategy and purpose; management approach; economic, environmental and social impacts; transparency; corporate governance; inclusion of stakeholders, equality approach, equity and inclusion of the initiative; replicability and scalability; and sustainability and resilience. Criteria aligned with UNDP’s global SDG impact standards. Of the 52 initiatives postulated, 33 were from medium and large companies, and 19 micro and small.
The initiatives presented are linked to more than one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), demonstrating the transversal approach and the transformative vision of doing business of Dominican companies.
The event was also attended by the Promising Practices Evaluation Committee made up of representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR), the National Council for Private Enterprise (CONEP), the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), the Association of Industrial Merchants (ACIS), the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE), the National Network for Business Support for Environmental Protection (ECORED), the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMyM).
