Entities evaluate formulas with JetBlue to reduce costs for US and DR flights

The reduction of the airfare, the inclusion of a first suitcase free of charges and the elimination of the tourist card charge to Dominicans who enter the country, were among the central issues discussed in a meeting between the interim general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) and senior executives of the North American airline JetBlue.

Héctor Porcella, interim general director of the IDAC, offered details of his meeting at the central office of the institution, with the president and director of Operations of the airline, Johanna Geraghty, who was accompanied by Michael Quiello, chief of staff; Adam Schless, director of Actas de Aeronaves and Alexis Morel, Regional Manager for Airports in Latin America.

The IDAC director was accompanied by Antonio Yapor, alternate ambassador to the ICAO and a member of the Civil Aviation Board, who presented the position of his organization during the consultation.

Porcella explained that one of the points discussed at the meeting seeks to set a rate, for the benefit of the Dominican diaspora, that does not exceed 500 dollars, including taxes.

The representatives of the IDAC and the Civil Aviation Board also proposed that in the case of Dominicans residing in the United States they be exempt from paying for the first suitcase, as the Creoles who travel through JetBlue have been demanding, Porcella pointed out.

“Likewise, we put forward two reasonable proposals to be considered by JetBlue as rotating president of the IATA (International Air Transport Association): the first would involve modifying its computer systems to eliminate the charge to Dominicans of the tourist card at the ticket office; and the second, eliminate antigen tests for travelers entering the United States from the Dominican Republic,” Porcella said.

He stated that the points submitted by the IDAC and the JAC found receptivity and good disposition among the senior executives of the North American airline, promising to analyze each of the points and respond within a reasonable time.

Porcella revealed that the Jet Blue delegation previously met with President Luis Abinader, who expressed to airline executives his interest in seeking solutions to Dominican communities abroad, who have long demanded more favorable conditions to stay in regular and permanent contact with the country.
