Among other points, the electrical reform that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promoted, is granting a greater market share to the CFE than to private companies.
The US government has expressed concern about the administrative, regulatory and legislative changes in energy matters that have taken place in Mexico.
“We cannot ignore the growing number of industry participants who also have concerns,” the letter stresses.
“We have been very clear that the T-MEC applies to the Mexican energy sector, and we have been honest with the Ministry of Economy about our concerns,” the document adds.
The US trade representative expressed her desire to strengthen joint competitiveness, and warned that she is analyzing the measures allowed by the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada to resolve the electricity issue.
“I will consider all available options within the T-MEC to address our concerns. I urge your government to suspend these worrying actions and ensure the protection of the rights of investors and exporters,” the letter concludes.
