Edguard Martín Becerra, 30 years old, was beaten to death by several guards for “disturbing order” in the corridors of the El Dorado prison, in Bolívar state. The prisoners denounced that in addition to beating Martín Becerra, they also beat another inmate from Lara state, who was convalescing. Eight prison guards were deprived of liberty for their alleged participation in the murder of Edguard Martín Becerra, 30 years old, who died on July 29 at the Central Eastern Region Penitentiary Center, better known as the El Dorado prison, located in Bolivar state.
In the month of July, a health day was being carried out in El Dorado by the Red Cross and, according to the team of the Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP), Edguard would have run through the corridors disturbing order, for which he was locked in a cell.
The same source, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that at least eight prison guards entered the cell at night and allegedly beat the prisoner with sticks and pipes.
The prisoners denounced that in addition to beating Martín Becerra, they also beat another inmate from Lara state, who was convalescing. However, Edguard, who was a native of Mérida, did not survive the beating and died.
Martín Becerra’s body was left out in the open inside the prison for at least four days, until the body was finally removed. From the prison they indicated that the inmate had died of a heart attack.

According to the autopsy, the prisoner died from hypovolemic shock due to internal bleeding and closed thoracoabdominal trauma, so an investigation was launched by the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigations Corps (Cicpc).
Four months later, arrest warrants were issued against eight prison guards from the El Dorado prison for allegedly being involved in this homicide. After being captured, they were held in the dungeons of the Cicpc Tumeremo and placed under the order of the 5th Prosecutor’s Office of the Public Ministry of that region.
This weekend they were brought before the courts, where the eight involved were charged with the crime of qualified homicide for futile and ignoble reasons to the detriment of Martín Becerra. The place of detention has not yet been fixed.
