Eight Cuban rafters arrived in Florida this morning

Mexico City, Mexico.- Despite warnings and returns from the US government, eight rafters Cubans arrived in a homemade boat on the Florida coast this Saturday.

Walter N Slosar, the chief patrol agent of the border guard, detailed on his Twitter account that they responded to a call that warned of the illegal landing. Upon arrival they found eight immigrants of Cuban origin. The Caribbeans came as far as Geiger Key.

In the photo shared by the official, the rustic state of the boat stands out. It is a wooden and zinc boat with a sail made of nylon sacks.
The US government has announced that illegal emigration will have serious consequences with the approval of new laws (after the abolition of Title 42 on Tuesday, May 11) and the doubling of deportation flights to Havana.

Authorities have ruled that those who do not use legal pathways to enter the United States are not eligible for parole and will be returned if they do not establish a reasonable fear of persecution or torture in the country of removal.

Former President Barack Obama scrapped the so-called “wet foot, dry foot” policy days before his term ended. The famous norm guaranteed asylum and immediate benefits to the islanders who managed to set foot on US land. After this announcement, the number of Cuban rafters intercepted at sea decreased drastically. However, under the current crisis that Cuba is experiencing, the nationals have taken up this desperate alternative.
While eight Cubans were detained in North American waters, the US Coast Guard returned this Saturday through the port of Orozco, Bahía Honda, in Artemisa, another 24 Cuban rafters intercepted at sea.
With these 21 men and three women, there are now 2,617 returnees for this service in 42 operations of this type so far this year. In 2023, 72 returns have been made from nations in the region with 3,767 people.
