In recent weeks there has been an increase in the prices of chicken eggs, which is reflected in the main supplying markets. According to the latest report of Midagri, the kilo of this product has had a peak this past Wednesday, where it cost S / 9.01.
How much does a kilo of egg cost?
Currently, the price of a kilo of pink eggs in retail markets is S/ 9.01, five cents more compared to last Monday.
“The price of this product due to its demand and due to consumer expectations, the price of this product has risen since last week. This morning it was quoted at S/ 9.01 per kilogram and last Thursday it was S/ 8.94 per kilogram”, says César Santisteban Pérez, general director of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies of Midagri.
However, in the case of wholesale markets there has been a decrease in prices.
“Currently it is at S/ 7.96 per kilogram, a price with a downward trend, after reaching a maximum price of S/ 8.28 per kilogram on June 6. Compared to last Thursday, the price of eggs fell by 27 cents per kilogram”point.
What is this increase due to?
The increase in this product would be due to a drop in the national production of hard corn, the main food for chicken; which has been rising in recent months due to the shortage of fertilizers and the high cost of fuel.
“The rise in egg prices was influenced by the costs of chicken feed, and if one analyzes the variations between January and June, it is seen that the fluctuation in the price of corn has been rising from US$246 a ton to US$337. ″says César Santisteban Pérez.
It is worth mentioning that the international market in Chicago registered strong declines last month in grains, such as wheat, corn and soybeans, due to international conflicts, since both Russia and Ukraine are relevant countries in the production and export of grains.
Would prices continue to rise?
According to Santisteban Pérez, prices should stabilize in the coming weeks, however, there is an upward trend in the last three months that would indicate that the high prices will continue in the following days.
Products of the basic basket
The Midagri report indicates that the prices of food sold in the main wholesale markets of the capital have registered a decrease of 1.1% today. This driven by lower costs of vegetables, legumes and fruits.
In this sense, legumes had a decrease of 6.0%, with American green peas being the product that has contributed the most to this decrease. On the fruit side, the food with the lowest price was papaya with 0.7%.
“In the case of the basket, there have been products that have increased, such as green beans by 13.8%, carrots by 14.9%, chili by 8.9% and celery by 8.3%. While peas have fallen by 9.7%, papaya by 6.5%, spinach by 5.3% and pumpkin by 4.2%. These variations are also due to seasonality and the stock of the product”, says Cesar Santisteban Perez.
