Eduardo Ortega Barría reveals that the Vaccine Development Center is planned to be inaugurated by 2023

The National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt), Eduardo Ortega Barría, revealed that by 2023 it is planned to inaugurate the Vaccine Development Center, one of the flagship projects of said entity and which will be located in the City of Knowledge .

He announced that they already have the building and are collaborating with Texas A&M University. In addition, there is a collaborator in India that already has a vaccine for Covid-19.

This center will have the work of high-level Panamanian researchers, who will work on different types of vaccines.

“The second phase of this project is to have a pilot vaccine plant, where we can produce vaccines that allow us to carry out research studies, this includes vaccines of different types; while the third phase is to try to have a vaccine production plant in Panama for Central America. The idea is that we produce vaccines for Central America, the Caribbean and countries in the Andean region”, he pointed out.

The scientific researcher stressed that they already have the financing, the building and the collaboration, so this year the researchers begin to train.

Among other important projects, he specified that it is the creation of regional research centers. “We are creating two regional research centers, one in the western region of Chiriquí and another in the central region to be defined,” he stated.
