Ebrahim Asvat on Russia-Ukraine invasion: “Unfortunately, foreign policy in Panama is a weather vane”

He said that when the first statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs came out, Russia’s name was not even mentioned and it was not a condemnation either, but something regrettable.

The lawyer and political analyst Ebrahim Asvat analyzed this Thursday the issue of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the position that our country has taken regarding this conflict.

In the opinion of the jurist, unfortunately the foreign policy in Panama is weather vane, “we are very willing to see what other countries do before making a decision.”

He said that when the first Foreign Ministry statement came out, “the name of Russia was not even mentioned and it was not a condemnation either, but something regrettable.”

He added that we do not have our own position, but we continue under guidelines, and being Latin America as it is, “we have always followed a position that is very consistent or close to that of the United States, because it is the hegemonic power that exists in the area.”
