The president of the National Penitentiary Institute of Peru (INPE), Javier Llaquereported that the State invests approximately S/900 per month for each person deprived of liberty in the country. This expense includes S/6.50 to S/7 daily for foodin addition to covering security and other penitentiary services.
“Each deprived of liberty costs approximately 30 soles daily. In food we are going 7 soles or 6.50 soles, this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The other expenses are security, services, etc. Per month it costs approximately 900 soles, ”he says.
In the program Let’s talk clearly Successful, Llaque exposed the problem of prison overpopulation. Currently, Peru has 99,600 prisoners, while the installed capacity of the penalties is only 41,700, which generates a deficit of approximately 58,000 spaces.
“We are currently 99,600 deprived of liberty and we have capacity for 41,700. That is, we practically lack 58 thousand spaces. In the next few days, we will put the first stone in a penalty, with the capacity of 800 hostel units in the city of Abancay, ”said Llaque, as part of the efforts to mitigate this crisis.
