Duque asks for “finesse” in rate hikes so as not to stop the reactivation

Within the framework of the III Summit of the Forum for the Progress of South America (Prosur), the president of Colombia Ivan Duke asked “fineness” in discussions of possible increases in interest rates so as not to slow down the economic reactivation of the countries of the region.

“Recognizing the independence of central banks, it is also pertinent to warn that taking endogenous measures in the face of an exogenous phenomenon can lead to interest rates being increased to the point of slowing down the reactivation. Therefore, finesse in these decisions is necessary for maintain the reactivation of our countries”said the national president.

He also asked the continental bloc, “strengthen” the coordination table for the production of vaccines against covid-19 in the region. “It is one of the goals that we must achieve. Greater diversification and capacity to produce vaccines in our countries in the next 18 months, not only for covid-19 but also for other pathologies”added the Colombian president.

During last year, Colombia held the pro tempore presidency of the regional bloc, which will be handed over to Paraguay at this third summit, under the mandate of Mario Abdo Benítez.

Presidents and senior officials from Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru and Colombia participate in this Thursday’s summit. Suriname participates as a guest and has requested its incorporation as a full member of this integration mechanism created in 2019.

“We want to continue strengthening Prosur”, Duque highlighted, mentioning that this body is beyond the political ideologies for which Unasur decayed.
