A new inpatient ward for children was set up in the Garrahan Hospital due to the rebound in coronavirus infections in recent weeks. Doctors warned that many come for other pathologies and, when swabbed, test positive for the disease.
The head of Infectology of the Garrahan Hospital, Rosa Bologna, reported that cases increased mainly children under three years of age, so a third hospitalization room was set up in the installations.
“We have patients admitted to three wards and with two patients in intensive care units”said the official of the Garrahan Hospital. He added that a week ago 51 positive cases were registered; however, this figure became a daily constant in recent days.
We have to adapt the rooms and, in turn, the different protocols for patient care.
Many of the patients came to the clinic with symptoms of coronavirus, but there are those who test positive after arriving at the health center to be admitted for abdominal surgery and other complications.
Infections in babies can be complicated
The doctor recommended that isolates be well implemented at home to avoid complications in minors, who are not exempt from getting sick and recalled that the coronavirus vaccine is the best way to reduce the risk of complications.
There is a commensurate increase in young infants. They have a fever or upper respiratory infection.
Although some babies develop a serious infection, no fatal complications are reported. The more complicated patients who are in intensive care present pictures of pneumonia or respiratory infection with oxygen requirement.
One point that the Garrahan Hospital authorities regret is that at least 40% of those over three years of age do not have the vaccine against the virus or have the incomplete schedule, which is why they recalled the importance of immunization of the whole family.
