With congratulations Cires announced the election of Cardet, who, he assured, “is an example of courage”, and that of Sergia Elena de Séliman, of the Social Christian Reformist Party, as vice president of the Organization.
“I congratulate Dr. Séliman from @PartidoPRSC [Partido Reformista Social Cristiano] for his election as VP and Dr. Cardet from @MCL [Movimiento Cristiano Liberación] for his election as honorary VP. Cardet is an example of courage. I thank the @CubaPdc [Partido Demócrata Cristiano de Cuba] his candidacy and the majority of the #ODCA-Caribbean parties have voted for me for deputy VP,” Cires wrote.
During the vote, Yaxys Cires was also elected deputy vice president for the Caribbean area, representing the Christian Democratic Party of Cuba, he explained to CubaNet.
Edward Cardett
Dr. Eduardo Cardet, leader of the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL), was arrested on November 30, 2016, five days after the death of Fidel Castro, and found guilty of assaulting a state official. For this, the island regime sentenced him to three years in prison in March 2017.
The Cuban opponent, successor to the late Oswaldo Payá at the head of the MCL, fulfilled on Monday, September 30, 2019 the entire sentence.
In January 2020, the authorities prevented him from leaving the country when he was about to take a flight at the José Martí International Airport in Havana.
The doctor would take a flight to the United States, but was prevented by the Cuban customs authorities. “A Customs officer from the air terminal informed Cardet that he had a restriction on leaving the country and that he should know the causes,” it was known at the time.
